Art Degree in Game Art
Over the past 20 years, there has been an explosion in the world of video games. Gone are the pinball machines and simple arcade games like “Pacman.” They have been replaced by intricate video games that are almost lifelike and often give the user total control over the lead character in an animated film.
There is a lot of work that goes into designing a computer game. When thinking about the design of a computer game, we often think about the logistics of the game itself. But what about the art that encompasses the video game? A person with an art degree in game art has almost a combination of a degree in graphics art as well as animation. Twenty years ago, this art form did not even exist, yet today it is burgeoning. As the continued demand for more exciting video games continues to grow and video game consoles keep changing, there is an ever increasing demand for qualified video game artists who can make the graphics and artwork that make the video game seem so realistic.
In addition to video game consoles which people play at home on their television sets, there are also hundreds of video games that people play online. There are definitely no shortages of video games for those with an art degree in game art to work. It takes quite a while for a video game to be released the public from its original inception and most of that time is spent going back and forth among the art team that is hired to make the game more realistic.
A person who wishes to work on game art should be able to draw fairly well and be tech savvy. You are, in effect, creating part of the software for the video game. Although you are not dealing with the logistics of the game, you are dealing with the background art and even the art involved in creating the main characters. It is important for a game artist to know how to draw animation quite well.
An art degree in game art can be one of the most lucrative ways to make a living drawing. It is the ideal way for someone who enjoys drawing animated figures to have a prosperous career. Although an inborn talent of knowing how to draw is required, much of this art form can be learned through instruction at a qualified art school.
In order to get an art degree in game art, you will need to enroll in an accredited art school that offers such courses. Most art schools that combine technical training with art, such as drafting and design courses will offer such degrees. Once you have earned your degree, you will probably work under the supervision of other artists before you can work on your own. Most companies have teams of individuals who work on the art on a video game. The teams brainstorm ideas back and forth to come up with the best artwork for the game as well as the most compelling video characters.
If you are the type of person who enjoys drawing, loves animation and enjoys playing video games, you might consider earning an art degree in game art. Imagine being able to say that you actually worked on the artwork for the latest video game that is all the rage!
